Mike de Jong, a B.C. Liberal leader candidate, spoke at Carrier Lumber in Prince George today about lumber exports to India.

Until recently, lumber exports from British Columbia to India were restricted over fears of imported pests within the wood. Now, spruce, pine, and fir (SPF) lumber may be exported to India, provided it has been heat-treated for phytosanitary reasons.

de Jong, former Minister of Forests, travelled last year to Chandigarh, India to open the B.C. Opportunity Office with a mandate to facilitate increased trade.

“Let’s make this opportunity work for British Columbians,” says de Jong. “I want to challenge ourselves to double the wood exports to India in the next two years and begin the process of opening up yet another market for BC’s forest products.”

President of Carrier Lumber, Bill Kordyban, said, “This is yet another positive development for diversifying our lumber export markets and creating more opportunities to sell our wood products. India’s market shows promise and we look forward to increased lumber shipments to that country.”
