Building Firewise communities

The National Fire Protection Association in the United States, has a Firewise Communities program that encourages local solutions for wildfire safety by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, firefighters, and others in the effort to protect people and property from wildfire risks.

As of June 2011, there are over 700 sites in 40 states in the U.S. that are recognized Firewise Communities.

This video, called “Safe From the Start“, documents the journey of one developer who incorporated Firewise principles into the development of a new subdivision. Learn about the benefits of creating a safer community in a wildland fire prone area and for minimal cost.
