China is now the world’s largest importer of softwood lumber and logs

Reduced activities in the housing construction sector in China decreased importation of softwood logs and lumber in late 2011, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Despite the decline in the 4Q, total imports during 2011 reached a record high, making China the largest importer of logs and lumber in the world.

International softwood markets 2011 - future developments remain uncertain

Following a partial recovery of the markets for sawn softwood in 2010, and fairly good sales in the first half of 2011, the markets for sawn softwood production and consumption have slowed down again, tempering the expectations for 2011 and 2012, in particular in Europe, as delegates at the 6th International Softwood Conference held in Copenhagen on 20 and 21 October 2011 reported.

Timber Trade Flow Maps of China and the Mekong Region

This report provides a number of illustrated maps giving an overview of the timber trade flows in Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam and their respective trading partners. The maps provide information on the import and export in value as well as volume (RWE). In addition, there are a number of maps summarising the regional Mekong trade flows. One part of these maps pictures the Mekong as one entity where exports and imports are combined. The other maps show a complete picture with all internal trade in this region.

Softwood lumber dispute’s next round set to begin August 9

On August 9, the United States will makes its case to the London Court of International Arbitration that British Columbia is subsidizing timber prices for pine-beetle damaged trees.

The London Court of Arbitration is the body Canada and the U.S. selected as the final level of appeal for disputes under the Softwood Lumber Agreement.

The details of the U.S. claim have not yet been made public.

Canada will have 90 days to make a response.

FFIF : Lively Timber Sales Activity in June

Finland, Jul 13, 2011 - The forest industry purchased 4 million cubic metres of wood in June and all timber grades were in good demand. The volume of purchases doubled from May, matching the volume achieved in June last year.

Timber prices were high, translating into excellent earnings for forest owners who made timber sales in June.

Seattle, USA. Global demand for softwood lumber increased by over 10 percent in 2010. This came after a year when wood consumption worldwide was the lowest it had been in almost 50 years. This upward trend in consumption has continued thus far in 2011, with total volume consumed being more than 15 percent higher than the same period in early 2010, according to the market publication Wood Resource Quarterly.

Last year global demand for softwood lumber increased by more than 10 percent after having hit a 50-year low in 2009. The rise in demand has pushed lumber prices in North America, Asia and Europe to their highest levels in ten months, reports the WRQ.
