New accord for tropical forests enters into force

The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) announced the entry into force of the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 (ITTA, 2006) effective Wednesday, December 7th 2011. The ratification of the agreement by the West African nation of Benin triggered the entry into force of this successor agreement to the Organization’s current governing treaty (ITTA, 1994).

Softwood dumping investigation

The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service has launched anti-dumping procedures against softwood lumber imports from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, Canada, and the USA. Mainly concerned from a European point of view are assortments of softwood lumber for construction purposes sorted by strength by machine. If the investigation concludes that dumping took place, the responsible ministry could impose temporary anti-dumping duty.

Forest Industry Applauds Government for Promoting Canadian Wood in Asia

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) is pleased that the Minister of Natural Resources, Joe Oliver, has promoted Canadian wood frame construction as environmentally friendly and energy efficient during his trip to China.

Minister Oliver attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of China's first four-storey wood frame structure, a joint Canada-China project using Canadian lumber, located in the Tianjin Economic Development area.

New Zealand’s log exports to China account for one-third of country’s timber harvest in 2011

Log exportation from New Zealand continues to rise at a record pace, with almost one-third of the country’s timber harvest being processed at sawmills in China. The high demand for logs from overseas has increased domestic sawlog prices to their highest levels in 15 years, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly.

Eucalyptus from NZ port top wood export

Exports of Southland eucalyptus woodchips have according to the Southland Times doubled in the past two years and the wood is on the way to becoming the region’s main timber export. South Port chief executive Mark O’Connor said the volume of chips heading to Japan had climbed from 100,000 tonnes to more than 200,000 tonnes in two years, with the potential to climb beyond 250,000 tonnes.

Exports of logs and lumber from the US and Canada to China to reach record

Lumber shipments from Canada alone could reach 1.2 billion dollars this year. The North American share of log and lumber import volumes to China has increased from four percent in 2005 to 18 percent in 2010.

The US and Canada have been exporting record volumes of logs and lumber to China in 2011. The Wood Resource Quarterly predicts that exports in 2011 will double those seen in 2010 to reach an estimated value of 2.6 billion dollars.

China imports of BC lumber jump 97%

According to the latest import statistics from China Customs, Canadian lumber shipments to China (almost all from B.C.) increased by a whopping 97% in the first six months of 2011 over the same period in 2010. Chinese softwood lumber imports from Canada totaled 3.14 million m3 for the first six months of 2011 as compared to 1.6 million m3 for the same period in 2010. Timber Trade Flow Maps of China and the Mekong Region

This report provides a number of illustrated maps giving an overview of the timber trade flows in Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam and their respective trading partners. The maps provide information on the import and export in value as well as volume (RWE). In addition, there are a number of maps summarising the regional Mekong trade flows. One part of these maps pictures the Mekong as one entity where exports and imports are combined. The other maps show a complete picture with all internal trade in this region.
