Timber movement control technology transfered

The Brazilian computerised system for data recording in timber operations and trade called “Document of Forest Origin” (DOF) will be shared with other Latin American countries and also with South Africa, China and Russia according to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA).

UPM to sell its logging company in Russia to International Paper

UPM and International Paper have signed an agreement concerning the sale of UPM's ownership in the Russian logging company ZAO Tikhvinsky Komplexny Lespromkhoz. According to the agreement, the operations, permanent personnel and logging license covering 184,000 hectares of forest area in Tikhvin in the Leningrad oblast will transfer to International Paper Russia Holding B.V. The parties have decided not to disclose the transaction price. The final closure of the transaction is subject to the approval of Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service.

Três Lagoas will host the two largest pulp mills in the world

Brazilian Valonline reports today that Marcelo Castelli, director at Fibria Cellulose SA with eucalyptus plantings in the city Três Lagoas (In the state Mato Groso de Sul) will maintain the schedule for opening of the second line of factory in 2014. With investments of 5.8 billion real (BRL), the forests must be planted before the end of 2011.

Sappi Forests buys 14 500-ha plantation from Mondi

Paper and pulp manufacturer Sappi Forests said on Tuesday that it had extended its plantation holdings in South Africa with the purchase of the Sjonajona plantation in the Mpumalanga province from Mondi.

The plantation lies between Machadodorp and Barberton and is 14 500 ha in extent, of which 9 400 ha consists predominantly of pine. The company said that the acquisition would bring Sappi's total planted area in Mpumalanga to 143 400 ha out of a total 230 200 ha plantation ownership in the province.

Job cuts come to forest, energy ministries

VICTORIA – The B.C. government issued 294 layoff notices Monday to staff in the forests and energy ministries, and announced it is closing the forests ministry field office in Prince Rupert.

Forests Minister Pat Bell said the Prince Rupert office had been reduced to about 10 staff with harvesting activity at a low ebb in northwestern B.C., and the functions of the office can be handled by the Terrace and Haida Gwaii offices.
