Land use change

Biodiesels pollute more than crude oil, leaked data show

Greenhouse gas emissions from biofuels such as palm oil, soybean and rapeseed are higher than those for fossil fuels when the effects of Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) are counted, according to leaked EU data seen by EurActiv.

The default values assigned to the biofuels compare to those from Canada’s oil sands – also known as tar sands – according to the figures, which should be released along with long-awaited legislative proposals on biofuels in the spring.

Too Much Focus on Forest Conservation, Too Little on Food

Proper attention needs to be given to livelihood improvement. Forest protection is an important objective, yet local livelihoods, particularly food security of local people, needs to be taken into account.

The goal of forest protection may not be achieved otherwise. Appropriate land and resource use planning is needed. It is necessary to plan areas of forest conservation and livelihood activities. Where food insecurity is a problem, it is important that local people can use the forestland for food production.

Eco ministry says its satellite tech use is optimal

MUMBAI: According to the Union environment ministry, there are 6.5 million hectares of plantations outside the recorded forest area, which primarily includes native plant species mixed with others. The ministry also says certain forest areas have been diverted (with native forests) for nonforestry purposes, which are then compensated by afforestation and plantations.

‘PLUP fiction’ improves land use planning in Lao PDR

BOGOR, Indonesia (11 May, 2011)_A CIFOR-led project is yielding innovative tools that help rural people improve their livelihoods and protect their natural resources.

In recent years, the Lao PDR government has championed participatory land use planning (known by its abbreviation PLUP). This approach aims to increase the involvement of villagers in decision making on land zoning and management. Nonetheless, an analysis by CIFOR and its partners of some PLUP pilot projects revealed deficiencies in the methodology, which was frequently participatory in name only.

Rethink growth with forest capital

Can you love tigers but hate forests? This is the question that troubled me as I visited the middle of India last fortnight. I was in Nagpur, where local politicians, conservationists and officials were discussing what needed to be done in this chronically poor and backward region endowed with forests and tiger habitats.
