Appeals court allows logging Oregon old growth

GRANTS PASS, Ore. – A federal appeals court Friday cleared the way for logging to resume in an old growth forest reserve at a national forest in Oregon to protect northern spotted owl habitat from being lost to wildfire.

Trying to assess the magnitude of pulp closures in China

LONDON, Aug. 12, 2010 (RISI) - This week the Chinese government, following up on an announcement made on May 27 of this year, released a final list of 279 pulp and paper mills at which capacity is to be removed as part of its broader program of closing small, inefficient manufacturing operations across many industries that pose problems with respect to high levels of pollution or energy consumption.

Brazilian debt exchanged for forestry protection

The US and Brazil have signed an agreement whereby US$21 million (£13.5 million) of Brazilian debt will be put into a fund for the protection of the country’s rainforest and tropical ecosystems.

The US has agreed that instead of paying back its debt, the money will be utilised to protect the Caatinga and Cerrado ecosystems and conserve the rainforest on the Atlantic coast. These three areas in Brazil are currently under threat of serious deforestation but do not receive as much attention or publicity as the Amazon region.

Biomass power plant finds wood to burn

The company that wants to build a controversial wood-burning power plant near Shelton has signed a fuel-supply contract with Mason County’s largest private timberland owner – Green Diamond Resource Co.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Adage spokesman Tom DePonty said the agreement should provide about 20 percent of the 604,000 tons of wood debris the company needs to power its plant each year.

It is the first fuel-supply contract signed by Adage and a forest landowner for the $250 million project.

Liberia's inquiry into a carbon offsetting deal is a vital step forward

You report that "a British company's proposal to rent out one-fifth of Liberia's forests for carbon offsetting could have bankrupted the impoverished west African state" (UK firm's carbon offset deal 'could have bankrupted Liberia', 24 July). While this was certainly accurate reporting, it also missed a vital point – that this marks a vital step forward for Liberia.

Arkhangelsk region to get new project

Novye Lesnye Technologies (New Timber Technologies, St. Petersburg) is to invest over RUR11.8 mln (€ 300 th.) in construction of a mill for advanced timber processing in the Arkhangelsk region.

The mill is to produce wooden boards and chipboards with annual capacity making up 250 th. cubic meters and 325 th. cubic meters respectively.

Besides, the mill will have a sawmilling facility (100 th. cubic meters per year) and glued log production (15 th. cubic meters per year).
