Guyana considers implications of new EU’s laws on illegal timber

Europe has passed new legislation to counter the flow of illegal timber into its markets. With Guyana last year exporting timber to the tune of US$5M ($1B) to the European Union, the market is one that the country could ill-afford to lose.
Next Wednesday, the Forest Products Association of Guyana (FPA) will be holding a workshop with the assistance from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, to increase awareness of the EU’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) new measures which have implications for exporting countries.

Akzonobel Invests €90ml in Growth Strategy to Supply World’s Largest Pulp Mill

Netherlands, Jan 24, 2011 - AkzoNobel has signaled its strategic intent to accelerate growth by investing close to €90 million in a new facility being built in Brazil. The plant, operated by the company’s Pulp and Paper Chemicals business, Eka Chemicals, will supply the world’s largest pulp mill.

New Study Suggests Global Pacts Like REDD Ignore Primary Causes of Destruction of Forests

NEW YORK (24 January 2010)—A new study issued today by some of the world's top experts on forest governance finds fault with a spate of international accords, and helps explain their failure to stop rampant destruction of the world's most vulnerable forests. The report suggests that global efforts have too often ignored local needs, while failing to address the most fundamental challenge to global forest management—that deforestation usually is caused by economic pressures imposed from outside the forests.

ANDRITZ receives major order for supplies to Eldorado pulp mill, Brazil

Graz, Austria, Jan 21, 2011 - International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from Eldorado Papel e Celulose Ltda. (Eldorado Brasil) to supply a complete fiberline and other major equipment for the new pulp mill in Três Lagoas, Brazil. Start-up is scheduled for the third quarter of 2012. It was agreed not to disclose the order value.
