FAO highlights exemplary forest management in the Dominican Republic and Guyana

In 2007 the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations began a search for instances of good forest management in Latin America and the Caribbean. The results of that search were published last year, with the hope that the cases highlighted would provide inspiration and guidance for policy-makers and resource managers across the region. The resulting report is called Standing Tall: Exemplary Cases of Sustainable Forest Management in Latin America and the Caribbean.

ETS 'big opportunity' for farmers

Wanganui hill country farmers have a massive opportunity to use the Emissions Trading Scheme to get a return from their marginal land, Pat Hawinkels says.

"Internationally, the market for carbon is huge and it will just get bigger."

People registering their forests in the Emissions Trading Scheme get money for growing trees, which store carbon.

Registering for the scheme was only complex the first time, he said, and for some the money would keep a marginal farm viable.

European Investment Bank delivers record lending for climate action in 2010

In 2010, the European Investment Bank (EIB) increased financing for climate action projects to €19 billion, representing 30% of its lending in the European Union, and up from €16 billion in 2009. In 2010, total EIB lending reached €72 billion – €63 billion in the EU, and €9 billion outside the EU – supporting over 460 large-scale projects. This marks a gradual return to pre-crisis levels as the Bank adapts its activity to the economic environment.

ANDRITZ to supply gasification plant to Metsä-Botnia’s Joutseno mill

Graz, Austria, Feb 21, 2011 - International technology Group ANDRITZ has been selected to provide a gasification plant to Metsä-Botnia’s Joutseno mill, Finland. The 48 MW plant will generate green fuel gas from local biomass, thus making the mill independent of fossil fuels.
