Asian forest agency due in 2013

Korea will try to successfully launch the first Asian international agency by 2013 proposed by the country, the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) to be based in Seoul.

The Korea Forest Service (KFS) said Monday that the country will put forth its best efforts to realize its agreement with ASEAN member states last week on the establishment of AFoCO.

Inner Mongolia reforestation makes progress

Joint efforts by South Korea and China to stop desertification in the Inner Mongolian desert have made headway, creating a large artificial forest, a local government said Monday.

The Forestry Department at China’s autonomous region of Inner Mongolia said an 8.7-square-kilometer forest in the Ulan Buh Desert was completed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, a central development aid agency under the authority of the South Korean foreign ministry, and the Bayan Nur municipal government.

Korea to plant millions of trees in China

CHANGWON ― Over the next five years, Korea will channel 3 billion won ($2.6 million) to plant millions of trees along the border areas of China and Mongolia to prevent the expansion of yellow dust storms here.

Toward that end, the Korea Forest Service (KFS) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Tuesday with the two neighboring states on the sidelines of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) conference in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
