Last year, the province of British Columbia budgeted $60 million for fighting forest fires, but ended up spending $400 million.

This year, the province lowered its firefighting budget to $52 million, however it is currently spending almost $6 million a day while 400 wildfires are burning their way through the province.

The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch reports 1,235 fires have been recorded so far this fire season, with 84,307 hectares burned.

So why is the budget so low?
