The Lao-European Union Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) process will help Laos to reduce illegal deforestation and promote good forest governance, which will bolster poverty reduction and sustainable management of natural resources.

Officials from relevant government organisations and representatives of international organisations, notably the European Union (EU) and the German Agency for International Development (GIZ), are now meeting in Vientiane to discuss preparations for the FLEGT project.

The objective of the two-day meeting is to improve knowledge and coordination among the sectors implementing the FLEGT Voluntary Partnership Agreement and increase understanding of the project, said Dr Phouangparisack. The Lao government and GIZ agreed last month on a new 5.8 million euro technical cooperation project supporting FLEGT. The agreement is an important step to address the issue of illegal timber and trade.
